McAloo Birthday Burger

The other day I was talking to one of my school friends who lives in India. We had a great catch up conversation. Among other things he also told me about a birthday party that he had attended the day before. Turns out that this party was held in local McDonalds, I could feel a sense of excitement when he told me that.

I could not help but give a thought to this once the call ended. Fries, McAloo Burger and soft drink gives a sense of excitement to us in the so called third world, when the only yankees who flock to McDonalds are the ones who are short on time or cash ( or both). Is it not odd that the kind of food that is taken up mostly as a last resort by a set of people is looked upon as a status symbol by another set of people? Or is it too obvious?

That brings us to an old adage( which by the way is cliched): ghar ki murgi daal barabar ( the chicken cooked at home is same as bland pulse), literally. We flock to these 'hep' places not because the food is excellent, but because this gives a sense of high, a sense of achievement, a feeling that we are the higher ups of the society !! I do it all the time. What else is new?

For gods sake, McAloo Burgers for a party ?? I would not eat that for breakfast if I had an option.
